KAT CONTRERAS
I am a visual storyteller based in Los Angeles
with a decade of experience as a photographer and media producer for personal brands, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations. My journey as an Afro-Latinx queer immigrant from the Dominican Republic, shaped by my upbringing in Miami, fuels the inspiration behind my work.
I am inspired by the vivid colors of the African Diaspora in the Caribbean, the fusion of vintage and modern design, the graffiti-adorned streets and subways of 1980s New York City, and the vibrant tapestry of queer life. I thrive at the intersection of media and technology, and am passionate about creating beautiful, accessible, and inclusive designs, technological solutions, and visual stories that provide unique perspectives and improve the lives of those who touch and/or see them.
My current projects include producing a documentary on transgender youth in LGBTQIA+ communities and co-producing a visuals-centric hybrid zine called Veer.
My editorial and fashion perspectives have been featured in publications, such as Time Magazine, Esquire, CNN, Variety, Forbes, Refinery29, Los Angeles Times, Billboard, InStyle, The Advocate, and Essence. While my lens is dedicated to a diverse array of subjects that cater to clients and commissions, my personal fulfillment blossoms from capturing the authenticity of everyday individuals, life, and locales in my portraits and landscapes, granting them a larger-than-life aura. I am a member of Diversify Photo, Authority Collective, and The Luupe, and am available for hire.
